SCHOOL INFORMATION

Currently I teach at Norland Middle School (6571) in Miami Gardens, Florida. My school is a part of Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Demographically my school is comprised of 95% African American students with many coming from Haitian, Jamaican, Bahamian and Caribbean descent. Norland is a mixed gender school and falls under the categorization of a Title I school in which nearly all students qualify for free or reduced lunch. While most students live within walking distance of the school, Norland is also home to a Magnet program in arts, theater, dance and music that is one of the most competitive in the district.

CLASSROOM INFORMATION

Currently I teach 7th grade Civics and 8th grade United States History. I teach seven periods out of an eight period block schedule which includes four classes per day that alternate. Each class period lasts for 85 minutes. Class sizes are exceptionally large this year as I teach over 240 students in total with each class including over thirty students. This year I do not teach any advanced or gifted placement classes. Around twenty percent of my students have IEPs or 504 plans in addition to varying distinctions of EBD, ESE and ESL. In addition, thirty of my students this year are retaking last year's coursework. Since I teach multiple preps, certain classes are constricted with lesson planning requirements while others allow for more creative methodology. Since Civics is an accountability area, lesson planning takes place through common planning with consultation from an academic coach. United States history follows a similar pacing guide but is planned individually. Outside of the classroom I also serve as the Social Studies Department Chair and Head Boys Basketball Coach which allows me to build even stronger relationships with my coworkers and students.
